Commander’s Corner

My Fellow Legionnaires

I guess winter has arrived in spades. At least we can be warm in our Legion, since all five HVAC units (Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning) have now been replaced, so we now have steady heat and air conditioning for next summer. Now, all we need to do is pay for them. One of the main attempts will be the Mega-Cash Raffle. This raffle will be one of our main one of our main fund raisers. Tickets are $20 each and will be available from the Bar, the Pull-Tab Booth and various Legion Family members. The drawing will be Saturday, December 14, 2019, for a first prize of $5000, with numerous other prizes. Buy early and buy often.

Also, we have some plans for our Centennial Celebration. Our Centennial is Thursday August 1st. We have decided to move the membership meeting up one week to that night, when we will hold a very short business meeting, followed by listing all living past- commanders, and honoring those who are present. This will be followed by cake and ice- cream. On the Saturday evening following, there will be a buffet dinner also celebrating our centennial. Watch for more on these two events in the coming months. May God bless us and guide us in these coming months, Bless and Keep our military, especially those in harm’s way, and Bless these United States.

Thought for the day: “The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.” Ethel Percy Andrus

Hello Ladies!

What a busy couple of months we had! I am very happy with what we have been able to accomplish especially on Jan. 24. In one day, we were able to feed about 50 homeless Veterans at CRRC on one of the coldest days of the year. They were as grateful as we were being in their presence. What an eye opener to actually hear their stories. It was pure joy to be with them and help them in a small way. We donated the December and January donations to CRRC while we were there. It was emotional to see the backpacks that we donated being put to use.

We also passed along all of the items that were donated for the MACV home for the Women Vets in Maplewood. We gave them exactly what was needed. They were delivered to the house the next day. We are not done yet as more specific items are needed. The list will change as time goes on. Rumor has it that another MACV house is in the works right in our neighborhood. I hope we can adopt that home as well!

We have our Annual Craft and Antique Market on Saturday March 9 from 10 – 4. We will continue to have our bake sale. Please contact Betty Kaiser at 651-777-5552 to let her know what goodies you can donate and reserve your table soon. The table rental is $25.

Soon after will be our Caribbean Night on Saturday March 23! Mafi Photobooths will be back by popular demand to help us have a fun night!! Tickets will be $20 per person.

Looking forward to a fulfilling year! Find those Veterans and see how we can help them! The real blessing will be ours…

See you soon!

We’ve just endured the coldest temperatures since 1996. I hate to admit it, but I Do remember that Ground Hogs Day! I’d say that “enough is enough”!

Maybe the best thing about February is that we usually think that we are on the down side of winter. Of course, Mother Nature always seems to have a surprise or two in store for us. So, if you find yourself struggling a bit with that thought, why not join your family and friends at YOUR American Legion Club 39? What better way to stay warm than to have a tasty meal, a couple of beverages, a little conversation and a good time? We have replaced all of the HVAC roof units so it should be warm and comfortable for everyone.

Don’t forget to join us for the annual “VALENTINE MEGA MEAT RAFFLE” on

February 9th. The doors will open at 11:00 AM with the raffle starting at 12:00 and going till gone. There will be over 200 packages of Prime Rib, Steaks and Lobster tails. There will also be 1 - $150.00, 2 -

$100.00 raffle drawings and Shake – a- Day tip boards. We will have drink specials with bottle beer and rail drinks - $2.50 each and tap beer - $2.25. The kitchen will also be offering a limited menu from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to win a package of surf and/or turf and have fun at the same time?

The February monthly drink specials are:

Beer of the month - Miller Lite - $2.50 Drink of the month - Wine - $3.00

We serve lunch from 11:00 Am – 2:00 PM – Monday – Friday, and dinner is served 5 – 8 PM, Monday – Thursday and 4 – 8 PM on Fridays.

As always, our staff looks forward to seeing, serving and chatting with you. So, stop in and enjoy some camaraderie as we work our way through this challenging winter.
